The mutual visa-exemption agreement between China and Thailand, which took effect on March 1, marks a significant milestone in the deepening relationship between the two nations. In an exclusive interview with CMG’s Zou Yun for “Leaders Talk,” Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin shared insights into Thailand’s appeal to tourists and businesses, and the country’s vision for future development.

Enhanced Tourism Through Closer Ties

With the visa-exemption policy in place, Chinese tourists can now experience the warmth of Thai hospitality without the hurdles of visa applications. Prime Minister Srettha highlighted that visitors from China are set to enjoy Thailand’s world-renowned cuisine, stunning tourist attractions, and the expanding high-speed rail network—a flagship project under the Belt and Road Initiative between the two countries.

Thailand’s Soft Power and Cultural Richness

Discussing Thailand’s soft power, Prime Minister Srettha emphasized the nation’s rich culture, vibrant sports scene, delectable gastronomy, and leisurely lifestyle. “Our cultural heritage and way of life are major draws for visitors and expatriates alike,” he said, noting that these elements contribute significantly to Thailand’s international appeal.

A Hub for Business and Manufacturing

Beyond tourism, Thailand is positioning itself as a regional hub for business and manufacturing. The prime minister highlighted the country’s strategic location, skilled workforce, and favorable investment climate as key advantages. “We offer a gateway to Southeast Asia, with connectivity that benefits both regional and global businesses,” he explained.

Addressing Safety and Security

Safety concerns and cross-border crime have been challenges in the past, but Prime Minister Srettha assured that significant measures have been implemented to address these issues. “We have strengthened law enforcement and international cooperation to ensure personal safety for all residents and visitors,” he stated.

Support for Global Initiatives

Reflecting on President Xi Jinping’s governance, Prime Minister Srettha expressed admiration for his focus on peace and shared prosperity. “We fully support the global initiatives that promote cooperation and development,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of collaboration between Thailand and China in contributing to regional stability and growth.

Looking Ahead

As Thailand and China continue to strengthen their partnership, opportunities abound for tourists, investors, and scholars. The visa-exemption agreement not only facilitates travel but also symbolizes the deepening bonds between the two nations. Prime Minister Srettha’s vision for Thailand is one of openness, prosperity, and active engagement on the global stage.
