Chinese FM Wang Yi Calls for Global Stability at Munich Security Conference

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi delivered a keynote speech at the Munich Security Conference on February 17, reaffirming China’s commitment to global stability in an increasingly turbulent world.

The Munich Security Conference, held annually in Germany, serves as a platform for international dialogue on pressing security issues. This year’s theme questioned whether the world is “suffering from zero-sum thinking” and sought pathways to move beyond “lose-lose” scenarios through collective cooperation.

Addressing these concerns, Wang Yi emphasized the importance of overcoming the “security paradox,” where one nation’s pursuit of security can be perceived as a threat by others, leading to an escalating cycle of mistrust and militarization. Global military spending reached a staggering $2,240 billion in 2022, highlighting the urgent need for alternative approaches to security.

Wang Yi called for renewed efforts in trust-building and transparent communication, advocating for multilateral cooperation to address shared global challenges. He underscored China’s role as a “reliable, responsible, and stable player” in international affairs, open to collaboration and committed to fostering peace through dialogue.

“In a world facing complex crises, it is imperative that nations work together to build trust and pursue mutual benefits,” Wang Yi stated. He urged other countries to take note of China’s willingness to contribute positively to global governance and to recognize the importance of setting clear expectations and red lines to prevent misunderstandings.

Reflecting on historical perspectives, Wang Yi’s remarks resonated with concerns raised by global leaders about the dangers of unilateralism and the need for a multipolar world order. His speech highlighted China’s push for multilateralism and a more inclusive global order, especially at a time when some nations are experiencing heightened tensions and considering decoupling strategies.

The conference served as a reminder of the critical importance of dialogue and collaboration in addressing the world’s most pressing security challenges. As nations navigate an increasingly complex international landscape, China’s call for stability and cooperation presents a pathway toward reducing tensions and fostering a more secure global environment.
