Nauru Recognizes One-China Principle, Strengthens Ties with China

Nauru, a tiny island nation in the Pacific, has officially recognized the one-China principle, severing ties with the Taiwan region on January 15 and re-establishing diplomatic relations with China on January 24. This significant shift underscores Nauru’s acknowledgment that there is but one China in the world, with the government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory.

During an exclusive interview with CMG’s Zou Yun in Beijing, Nauru’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Lionel Aingimea discussed the rationale behind this decision and the future of bilateral cooperation. The two countries are poised to deepen mutual understanding and collaborate on pressing developmental and environmental challenges facing Nauru.

Aingimea highlighted the potential for China to assist Nauru in tackling key issues such as environmental sustainability, economic development, and infrastructure enhancement. He expressed optimism about the enormous commercial potential in Nauru’s fisheries and port industries, hoping that collaboration with China would unlock new opportunities for growth.

The minister praised China’s approach to international relations and emphasized the importance of mutual respect and understanding. He expressed confidence that the strengthened ties would benefit both nations, fostering a partnership based on shared interests and goals.

Aingimea also extolled the charm and beauty of his native island, inviting global readers and travelers to explore Nauru’s unique cultural heritage and natural landscapes. With improved relations, there is hope for increased tourism and cultural exchange between Nauru and China.

As Nauru and China embark on this new chapter of diplomatic relations, the two nations look forward to a future of fruitful cooperation and shared prosperity.
