Maldivian President Muizzu Strengthens Ties with China on State Visit

Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has embarked on his first state visit to China, aiming to elevate bilateral relations to new heights. The two nations are expected to sign several cooperation agreements in tourism, infrastructure, climate change, and the green economy.

For the Maldives, an island nation heavily reliant on tourism, strengthening ties with China is pivotal for economic growth. Before the pandemic, China was the largest source of tourists to the Maldives since 2010. With China’s resumption of outbound travel, President Muizzu is keen to welcome more Chinese visitors to revitalize the tourism sector.

Infrastructure development is equally crucial for the Maldives. Under the Belt and Road Initiative, China has significantly contributed to enhancing the Maldives’ infrastructure. The China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, for example, has connected the capital city of Male with the neighboring island of Hulhumale, facilitating unprecedented mobility and fostering economic activities.

The focus on climate change and the green economy underscores both nations’ commitment to sustainable development. As the Maldives faces the existential threat of rising sea levels, collaboration with China on environmental initiatives is essential for the country’s future.

President Muizzu’s visit signals a pragmatic approach to international relations, prioritizing the welfare of the Maldivian people over major-power rivalries. By reinforcing cooperation with China, the Maldives seeks to harness opportunities for growth, stability, and environmental sustainability.
