Maldives President Muizzu Strengthens Ties with China on First State Visit

In a move signaling strengthened ties between the Maldives and China, President Mohamed Muizzu is paying a state visit to China from January 8 to 12 at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. This visit marks President Muizzu’s first state visit abroad since taking office in November, and he is the first foreign head of state to visit China by invitation in 2024.

The significance of this visit is underscored by the expectation that both nations will reach substantial agreements across a range of sectors, including politics, trade, investment, infrastructure development, education, tourism, culture, and the green economy. The mutual commitment reflects the deepening partnership between China and the Maldives, which began on October 14, 1972, when the two countries established diplomatic relations.

Over the decades, the relationship has evolved, with a notable milestone in September 2014 when President Xi Jinping made a state visit to the Maldives—the first by a Chinese head of state since the establishment of diplomatic relations. During that visit, the two leaders agreed to build a “future-oriented, all-round friendly and cooperative partnership.”

Strategically located in the heart of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives serves as a crucial link in shipping routes between Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East. Recognizing this, China views the Maldives as an important partner in its neighborhood diplomacy. Economic ties have been strengthening, with bilateral trade reaching $451 million in 2022—a 10.1 percent increase from the previous year. Chinese enterprises are investing in various sectors in the Maldives, including tourism, fisheries, transportation, and energy.

Collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), launched by President Xi in 2013, has been a cornerstone of the partnership. The BRI aims to develop trade routes connecting China with the rest of the world to enhance regional economic integration, boost trade, and stimulate economic growth. The Maldives has benefited from several BRI-related infrastructure projects, such as the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, the Hulhumale affordable housing project, and the expansion of the international airport in Male. These projects have addressed the Maldives’ socio-economic development needs and improved the living standards of its residents.

The China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, opened in 2018, stands as a testament to the collaboration. Spanning two kilometers, it connects Male with neighboring islands, alleviating traffic congestion and providing quicker access between the capital and the airport. This has also facilitated the formation of new residential areas around Male.

Tourism is a vital sector for the Maldives, known for its pristine white sand beaches and turquoise waters. The global COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted this industry. As the world recovers, attracting Chinese tourists is crucial for the Maldives’ economic revival. Authorities in Male are actively promoting the country’s natural beauty and cultural diversity to entice more visitors from China.

President Muizzu’s visit to China symbolizes a continued commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and exploring new avenues of cooperation. As both nations look forward to future collaborations, this partnership promises mutual benefits and a shared vision for prosperity.
