Beijing, January 1, 2024—In a nationally televised and live-streamed New Year message, President Xi Jinping highlighted China’s ambitious vision for 2024, emphasizing resilience, innovation, and the pursuit of modernization. Speaking from his office in Beijing, President Xi urged the nation to continue its relentless progress toward Chinese modernization, secure a better living for the people, and strive to make the world a better place for all.
Reflecting on the achievements of the past year, President Xi described 2023 as a year in which China “marched forward with solid steps.” He praised the Chinese people for their unity and ability to overcome challenges, stating, “When I see people rising to the occasion, reaching out to each other in adversity, meeting challenges head-on, and overcoming difficulties, I am deeply moved.”
President Xi acknowledged the diverse challenges faced by companies, job seekers, and regions affected by natural disasters in 2023. Despite these obstacles, he commended the extraordinary contributions of ordinary citizens, who proved to be the country’s backbone in times of adversity.
The Chinese economy, he noted, experienced a smooth transition in COVID-19 response measures, maintaining momentum in economic recovery. Gains were made in pursuing high-quality growth, upgrading the industrial system, and establishing sophisticated, smart, and environmentally friendly industries. China celebrated its 20th consecutive year of abundant harvests, cleaner waterways, greener mountains, and significant advances in rural revitalization.
Success stories emerged from various regions across the country. The revitalization of northeast China, rapid development of the Xiong’an New Area, the dynamic Yangtze River Economic Belt, and the burgeoning potential of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area showcased the nation’s vitality. “Despite the hurdles, the Chinese economy proved resilient, emerging stronger than ever,” President Xi asserted.
He also highlighted remarkable technological achievements, such as the commercial service entry of the C919 passenger airliner, successful trials of a Chinese-built large cruise ship, and the deep-sea manned submersible Fendouzhe reaching the deepest ocean trenches. Chinese products, including trendy brands and the latest mobile phone models, have gained global acclaim, underscoring the country’s industrial capabilities.
China’s success extended beyond the economic sphere into sports and cultural events. Chinese athletes shone at international competitions like the Chengdu Summer World University Games and the Hangzhou Asian Games, demonstrating the nation’s prowess on the world stage. Vibrant cultural events, such as the popular “village super league” football games and the “village spring festival gala,” added color and richness to people’s lives.
Concluding his message, President Xi called upon the nation to embrace the challenges and opportunities of the new year with confidence and determination. “Let us continue to work together, forge ahead, and make 2024 a year of progress and prosperity for China and the world,” he said.
