In a recent visit to the Chinese mainland, former Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme underscored the vital importance of strengthening cooperation and dialogue between China and Europe. Speaking with CMG’s Zou Yun, Leterme shared his insights on the evolving dynamics of China-EU relations and the need to bridge cultural gaps through mutual understanding.
“Interconnectedness is of paramount importance in today’s globalized world,” Leterme stated, highlighting China’s Belt and Road Initiative as a significant example of fostering global links. He emphasized that challenges and transitional problems should be addressed calmly and rationally, advocating for continued engagement rather than isolation.
Leterme expressed his continued admiration for China’s rapid infrastructure development and the increasing standard of living among its people. “China’s progress is remarkable,” he noted. “It’s essential for the West to appreciate these developments and seek common ground.”
At a critical juncture in China-EU and China-U.S. relations, Leterme cautioned against the notion of “decoupling.” He argued that such a path is not a solution and urged the European Union to pursue a more autonomous security strategy, less dependent on the United States. “Europe should foster its own approach to international relations, one that promotes cooperation and respects differences,” he said.
Addressing misconceptions about China, Leterme called for greater exposure to Chinese culture in the West. “We should not believe in media misrepresentations,” he warned. “Respecting cultural diversity is key to overcoming misunderstandings.”
During his visit, Leterme also paid homage to the Chinese laborers who lost their lives during the First World War in Ypres, near his hometown. “Their sacrifice is a token of solidarity between our nations,” he reflected, emphasizing the historical bonds that connect Belgium and China.
Leterme’s visit reinforces the ongoing commitment of former leaders to promote dialogue and understanding between East and West. His perspectives offer valuable insights into the potential for deeper cooperation and mutual respect in an increasingly interconnected world.
