Chengdu’s Journey to Becoming a “Park City”: A Green Revolution
How does a megacity with a population of 22 million transform into a “park city” and capture global attention? Chengdu, the capital of China’s southwest Sichuan province, is doing just that through innovative approaches to green and sustainable development.
In a special edition of “The Hub” titled “Green Talks with Mayors,” host Wang Guan sat down with Wang Zhihua, Deputy Mayor of Chengdu, to explore the city’s most iconic projects and initiatives aimed at promoting decarbonization, fostering sustainable growth, and raising public awareness about climate change.
Deputy Mayor Wang highlighted Chengdu’s commitment to environmental stewardship, emphasizing the importance of integrating green spaces and ecological considerations into urban planning. “Our goal is to create a harmonious relationship between people and nature,” he stated. “By prioritizing sustainability, we’re not only improving the quality of life for our residents but also setting an example for other cities worldwide.”
Chengdu’s involvement with C40, a global network of nearly 100 mayors united in climate action, underscores the city’s dedication to combating the climate crisis. “Learning from each other’s experiences is crucial,” Wang Zhihua noted. “By collaborating with other leading cities, we can accelerate our progress towards green targets and sustainable goals.”
Wang Guan also visited Chengdu’s Angong community to witness firsthand how the implementation of a “sky garden” has revitalized the old neighborhood. This innovative project has transformed rooftops into lush green spaces, providing residents with communal areas while contributing to the city’s ecological footprint. Additionally, the community’s waste sorting initiatives have turned organic waste into highly sought-after fertilizer, exemplifying practical solutions to environmental challenges at the grassroots level.
Chengdu’s green transformation illustrates how megacities can pursue sustainable development without sacrificing economic growth. Through a combination of policy, innovation, and community engagement, Chengdu is paving the way for a more sustainable future.
