At the 21st Doha Forum held in Doha, Qatar, the Palestinian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Husam Zomlot, called upon the international community to recognize the historical responsibilities of the United Kingdom and the United States in the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Speaking passionately, Zomlot highlighted the enduring impact of colonial-era decisions on the current situation in Palestine.
“The United Kingdom, Great Britain, has contributed to the situation that we live in today. It is the Balfour Declaration, 106 years ago, that has promised our land with that colonial arrogance, without consulting us,” Zomlot stated, referencing the 1917 declaration in which the British government expressed support for the establishment of a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine.
He further emphasized the role of global powers in shaping the conflict: “It was started by global powers and continued by the U.S.” Zomlot’s remarks underscore the long-standing grievances held by Palestinians regarding foreign involvement in their region and the historical decisions that have influenced current geopolitics.
The Doha Forum, an annual event bringing together leaders, policymakers, and experts from around the world, provided a platform for discussing critical issues affecting the Middle East and beyond. This year’s forum focused on enhancing dialogue and finding solutions to pressing global challenges.
Zomlot’s speech resonated with attendees, shedding light on the complexities of the Palestinian struggle and the importance of addressing historical contexts in pursuit of a lasting peace. His call for acknowledgment serves as a reminder of the deep-rooted issues that continue to affect the region.
