Singapore and China are poised to strengthen their longstanding partnership at the upcoming 19th Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) meeting, set to be held on December 7 in Tianjin, China. Co-chaired by Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong and Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang, the JCBC serves as the highest-level bilateral platform to guide strategic cooperation between the two nations.
Over the decades, both countries have cultivated a robust and multifaceted relationship, collaborating through various phases of development. Notable milestones include three Government-to-Government projects: the China-Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park, the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City, and the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity. Additionally, the state-level China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City and eight provincial business councils underscore the extensive cooperation at multiple levels.
In March this year, under the guidance of Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Chinese President Xi Jinping, the two nations elevated their relationship to an “All-Round High-Quality Future-Oriented Partnership,” marking a significant advancement in bilateral ties.
The upcoming JCBC meeting aims to build upon this momentum, exploring new avenues for collaboration in areas such as sustainable development, digital economy, and connectivity. As the world navigates turbulent times, strengthened cooperation between Singapore and China holds significant promise for mutual growth and regional stability.
