United Effort Needed to Eliminate Neglected Tropical Diseases in Asia
Across Asia, a health revolution is crucial. Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) continue to affect millions, causing debilitating health consequences and impeding economic growth. While significant progress has been made globally, Asia faces unique challenges that require collective action and increased commitment.
NTDs, a group of 20 infectious diseases including dengue fever, lymphatic filariasis, and leprosy, disproportionately affect the most vulnerable populations. In Asia, countries like Bangladesh, India, and the Philippines carry a substantial burden of these diseases. The socioeconomic impact is profound, with affected individuals often unable to work or attend school, perpetuating cycles of poverty.
Learning from the successes in Africa, where countries such as Togo and Malawi have eliminated multiple NTDs, Asia can accelerate its efforts through strengthened regional collaboration. Enhanced funding, improved healthcare infrastructure, and widespread public health campaigns are essential components in this fight.
The upcoming 2023 Reaching the Last Mile (RLM) Forum, scheduled for December 3 under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, presents a pivotal opportunity. This gathering will serve as a platform for Asian nations to reinforce their commitments, share best practices, and mobilize resources to eliminate NTDs.
Climate change, urbanization, and economic disparities exacerbate the spread of NTDs in the region. As the world grapples with these challenges, it is imperative for Asian countries to intensify their efforts. Collective action not only addresses a pressing health issue but also contributes to the broader goals of sustainable development and poverty alleviation.
