China Proposes Four-Point Plan for Middle East Peace at UN

At a high-level United Nations Security Council meeting on November 29, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi presented a four-point plan aimed at resolving the longstanding Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Chairing the session in New York, Wang emphasized that dialogue and negotiation are paramount to saving lives and achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.

“We should revitalize the political prospects of the two-state solution with stronger determination. The lack of a Palestinian state is the crux of the repeated turbulence in the Palestinian-Israeli situation,” Wang told the council members.

China’s proactive engagement in Middle Eastern diplomacy follows its successful mediation of the Saudi-Iran rapprochement in March—a significant breakthrough after years of strained relations between the two nations. This development underscores Beijing’s growing influence and commitment to fostering stability in the region.

Wang highlighted China’s capacity to play a constructive role in addressing Israeli-Palestinian tensions. “Israel has long been an independent state and the Jews are no longer without a home,” he remarked. “But the right of the Palestinian people to statehood, their right to existence, and their right of return has long been ignored. Fairness and justice on the Palestinian question lie in the two-state solution. This is irreplaceable.”

In addition to advocating for a two-state solution, Wang called for immediate actions to alleviate the humanitarian crisis. He urged the international community to “work for a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire with the greatest urgency.” He also appealed to the Security Council to “shoulder its responsibility on major issues of war and peace and life and death… and take further action promptly.”

China’s Role as a Peace Advocate

The recent escalation in the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza has drawn global attention to the urgent need for a resolution. Amid the turmoil, China has positioned itself as a steadfast advocate for peace, emphasizing the importance of a ceasefire and renewed commitment to the two-state solution.

China’s involvement signals a broader commitment to facilitating dialogue and stability not only in the Middle East but across Asia. By leveraging its diplomatic influence, Beijing aims to bring together conflicting parties and encourage negotiations that respect the rights and aspirations of all involved.
