At the Second Global Digital Trade Expo held on November 24, 2023, in Hangzhou, China showcased its expanding influence in shaping global digital trade legal frameworks.
Among the international experts attending was Anna Veneziano, Deputy Secretary-General at the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT). She lauded China’s significant contributions to the development of international rules and regulations in digital trade.
Expressing her impressions of the expo, Veneziano said she was deeply impressed by China’s rapid advancements in digital trade. \”As a lawyer and Deputy Secretary-General of UNIDROIT, I see a lot of opportunities and possibilities here,\” she remarked.
Veneziano highlighted China’s active participation in UNIDROIT’s activities, noting that Chinese experts and the government are playing a crucial role in developing balanced and transparent global legal frameworks. \”China has been very active in contributing to the development of this legal framework through the activity of the government itself as a member state of UNIDROIT, through the activity of specific experts, academic experts, and also other entities,\” she said.
Despite global challenges and perceived rivalries, Veneziano emphasized the cooperation among UNIDROIT’s 65 member states. \”China is a major player,\” she stated. \”We see that there is cooperation going on, and we see that actually, in the end, all our participants want things to function and want the global e-commerce to continue.\”
Addressing the importance of including the Global South in framing global digital trade laws, Veneziano acknowledged the need for direct participation from these countries. \”What we want to have now is the direct participation of actors from the Global South in the development of these instruments from the start,\” she explained. \”This is what we try to do with our member states, with the connecting states, and with experts coming from all over the world.\”
Veneziano’s insights reflect China’s expanding role in not just advancing technology but also in fostering international legal cooperation to enable global digital trade.
