At the second Forum on the Rule of Law in Global Digital Trade held on November 24, 2023, in Hangzhou, China, experts and officials gathered to discuss the evolving landscape of digital trade and the importance of legal frameworks in this domain. The event was part of the second Global Digital Trade Expo (GDTE) and drew participants from around the world.

Speaking at the forum, Anna Veneziano, Deputy Secretary-General of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT), highlighted China’s significant role in shaping global digital trade regulations. She acknowledged China’s increasing influence and its active participation as a member state in UNIDROIT. Veneziano emphasized China’s contributions to developing transparent legal frameworks through the efforts of the government, specialized experts, academic scholars, and various entities involved in digital trade.

“China’s engagement is crucial for the unification and harmonization of private law in digital trade,” Veneziano noted. “Their expertise and proactive approach contribute significantly to creating a robust legal environment that facilitates international trade and fosters global economic growth.”

The forum addressed key issues such as data governance, digital platforms, cross-border e-commerce, and the challenges of regulating emerging technologies. Participants underscored the need for collaboration among nations to establish common legal standards that can adapt to the rapid advancements in the digital economy.

China’s hosting of the GDTE and the associated legal forum reflects its commitment to leading and participating in global discussions on digital trade. By bringing together international experts and stakeholders, China aims to promote cooperation and understanding in developing legal mechanisms that support innovation while ensuring fair and secure trade practices.

As digital trade continues to expand, the establishment of clear and effective legal frameworks becomes increasingly important. Forums like the one in Hangzhou serve as platforms for dialogue and collaboration, paving the way for unified approaches to challenges in the digital trade arena.
