Uruguayan President Lacalle Pou Celebrates Strengthened Ties with China

Uruguayan President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou has concluded his first state visit to the Chinese mainland, marking a significant milestone in Uruguay-China relations. Describing the visit as positive and fruitful, President Lacalle Pou expressed optimism about the deepening partnership between the two nations.

In an exclusive interview with CMG’s Wang Guan on the program Leaders Talk, President Lacalle Pou shared his insights on the burgeoning relationship. Uruguay was among the first countries to join China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and ten years since its inception, the impact has been profound. “For us, BRI has been a great opportunity,” he stated. “I think that people in my country and politicians agree that we have to step forward with China.”

The economic ties between Uruguay and China have strengthened significantly, with 30% of all Uruguayan exports now destined for China. The president highlighted Uruguay’s unique natural environment that fosters exceptional livestock and agricultural development. Today, approximately 58% of Uruguay’s beef exports are shipped to China. “We are willing to make even bigger deals with China,” President Lacalle Pou affirmed, emphasizing the potential for increased trade and cooperation.

Reflecting on the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, President Lacalle Pou recounted the support extended by President Xi Jinping. “During the crisis, President Xi was more than generous with our country,” he recalled. Echoing the sentiments of a former ambassador, he added, “China is a good friend in good times, but China is a better friend in bad times.”

As Uruguay looks to the future, the strengthened partnership with China signals new opportunities for economic growth and collaboration. President Lacalle Pou’s visit underscores a mutual commitment to advancing shared interests and fostering a dynamic relationship that benefits both nations.
