The second Forum on the Rule of Law in Global Digital Trade was held on November 24, 2023, as part of the second Global Digital Trade Expo (GDTE) in Hangzhou, China. Mira Burri, a professor of international economic and internet law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lucerne, Switzerland, spoke exclusively to attendees on the sidelines of the forum. She emphasized the dangers of geopolitically-driven protectionism in the data-driven economy.
“While it’s natural for stakeholders to strive to be at the forefront of digital innovation and growth, we must be cautious of protectionist measures that hinder global collaboration,” Burri stated. “Geopolitical tensions can lead to barriers that not only restrict trade but also stifle innovation and economic development.”
