China Advocates for Lasting Peace in Middle East, Promotes Two-State Solution

Over a month has passed since the latest escalation of tensions between Palestine and Israel erupted, resulting in the loss of more than 14,000 lives, most of which were in Gaza. Following the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) adoption of a humanitarian-focused resolution on November 15, Israel and Hamas agreed on November 22 to a four-day pause in fighting.

The international community continues to seek concrete actions to promote peace, achieve a sustained ceasefire, and de-escalate tensions in the region. As a permanent member and the rotating president of the UNSC, China has advocated for immediate, effective, and meaningful actions to uphold justice and maintain peace.

A Commitment to Peaceful Resolution

China has consistently played a constructive role in seeking a peaceful settlement of the Palestinian question. During a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in June, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed a three-point plan emphasizing the establishment of an independent State of Palestine, increased development and humanitarian aid to Palestine, and a move towards renewed peace talks.

At the recent BRICS extraordinary summit on the Middle East, President Xi reiterated that the only viable path to end the cycle of conflict between Palestine and Israel lies in the two-state solution, which aims to restore the legitimate national rights of Palestinians within an independent state.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has engaged in extensive communications with leaders from over a dozen countries and held discussions with a delegation of Arab and Islamic foreign ministers. These efforts have focused on calling for an end to violence, the restoration of peace, establishing a specific timetable for resuming peace talks between Palestine and Israel, and working towards a swift, comprehensive, just, and enduring resolution of the Palestinian question.

Additionally, China’s Special Envoy on the Middle East Issue, Zhai Jun, has visited relevant countries in the region to seek a cessation of violence. China has also provided humanitarian assistance and emergency supplies to help alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza through the Palestinian National Authority, United Nations agencies, and with the support of Egypt.

International Collaboration for Lasting Peace

The recent developments underscore the need for the international community to intensify efforts towards achieving lasting peace in the Middle East. China’s proactive diplomacy and humanitarian assistance highlight its commitment to being a force for stability and justice in the region.

As global attention remains focused on the conflict, the pursuit of a two-state solution emerges as a critical step towards addressing the longstanding issues between Palestine and Israel. Through collaborative international efforts and renewed dialogue, there is hope for a future where peace and security can be restored for all peoples in the region.
