This year marks a significant milestone for the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), celebrating ten years of fostering economic development across the global south, including countries like Sri Lanka. The BRI has been instrumental in transforming economic landscapes by enhancing infrastructure, boosting trade, and fostering regional cooperation.
At this year’s Beijing Xiangshan Forum, a platform dedicated to addressing global security and cooperation, experts gathered to discuss the profound impact of the BRI and explore solutions to current global conflicts. We spoke with Piyal De Silva, former commander of the Sri Lankan Navy, who shared his insights into how the BRI has influenced Sri Lanka over the past decade.
The BRI’s Impact on Sri Lanka
Piyal De Silva highlighted the BRI’s role in advancing Sri Lanka’s infrastructure and economy. “The BRI has provided us with opportunities to improve our ports, roads, and overall connectivity,” he stated. “This has not only enhanced trade but also opened up new avenues for investment and tourism.”
Global Security Challenges
With ongoing conflicts around the world, such as the Ukraine crisis and the tensions between Israel and Palestine, global security has become an increasingly pressing issue. David Harland, executive director of the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue in Switzerland, emphasized the importance of international platforms in resolving such conflicts. “Global challenges require cooperative solutions,” Harland remarked. “Forums like Xiangshan bring together diverse voices to address these critical issues.”
China’s Global Security Initiative
The discussions at the forum also delved into how China’s Global Security Initiative can contribute to international peace efforts. The initiative aims to promote security through cooperation and mutual respect. Harland noted, “China’s approach to global security emphasizes dialogue and development. By fostering mutual understanding, there’s potential to mitigate conflicts and enhance stability.”
Looking Ahead
As the BRI enters its second decade, the emphasis on cooperation and security remains paramount. “Continued collaboration through initiatives like the BRI and platforms like the Xiangshan Forum is key to addressing both economic and security challenges globally,” De Silva concluded. “By working together, we can foster a more connected and peaceful world.”
