SCO and Xiangshan Forum: Enhancing Central Asia’s Security and Global Cooperation

Established in 2001, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has been instrumental in promoting regional security, stability, and development in Central Asia. By fostering cooperation among member states, the SCO addresses pressing security challenges and enhances mutual trust and collaboration.

An integral part of this regional security framework is the Beijing Xiangshan Forum, a China-initiated platform that brings together defense officials and experts to discuss security issues in Asia. The synergy between the SCO and the Xiangshan Forum plays a crucial role in strengthening security and defense exchanges among member nations.

In a recent interview, Vladimir Norov, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan and former SCO Secretary-General, shared his insights on how these two mechanisms reinforce each other. “The SCO provides a solid foundation for regional cooperation, while the Xiangshan Forum offers a platform for open dialogue on defense and security matters,” he said. “Together, they contribute significantly to maintaining peace and stability in the region.”

The collaborative efforts of the SCO and the Xiangshan Forum have led to coordinated actions against terrorism, extremism, and separatism, ensuring a safer environment for citizens of member states. Joint military exercises, intelligence sharing, and law enforcement cooperation are some of the key strategies employed to address common threats.

As the SCO continues to expand, with new members and observer states showing interest, its influence on regional and global issues is expected to grow. The inclusion of additional nations enhances the organization’s capacity to tackle complex challenges such as cybersecurity, transnational crime, and economic development.

“The expansion of the SCO signifies a collective commitment to peace and cooperation,” Norov emphasized. “By bringing more countries into the fold, we can develop comprehensive solutions to global problems and promote a harmonious international community.”

The intertwined roles of the SCO and the Beijing Xiangshan Forum exemplify the importance of multilateral cooperation in today’s interconnected world. Their ongoing efforts not only bolster security in Central Asia but also contribute to global peace and stability.
