Mary Robinson Calls for Stronger China-EU Relations and Climate Cooperation

Beijing, October 2023 — Former President of Ireland Mary Robinson, esteemed as one of the most influential Irish women of the 20th century, recently visited the Chinese mainland as Chair of The Elders, a group of independent global leaders founded by Nelson Mandela in 2007. In an exclusive interview, she shared her perspectives on enhancing China-European Union (EU) relations and the critical role of China-U.S. cooperation in addressing global climate change.

Mary Robinson, recognized in a nationwide survey by RTÉ Television as the only woman among the top five greatest people in Ireland’s history, emphasized the importance of dialogue and collaboration between China and the EU. She noted that mutual understanding and shared commitments to sustainable development can pave the way for stronger economic and social ties.

“The relationship between China and the EU is pivotal for global stability and prosperity,” Robinson remarked. “By working together, we can address common challenges such as climate change, promote fair trade, and uphold international norms.”

On the subject of climate change, Robinson highlighted the necessity of cooperation between the world’s major economies, particularly China and the United States. She stressed that their joint efforts are essential to meeting the targets set by the Paris Agreement and mitigating the adverse effects of global warming.

“Climate change knows no borders,” she said. “It is imperative that China and the U.S., as leading emitters and innovators, collaborate to drive global initiatives for a sustainable future. Their leadership can inspire other nations to enhance their commitments and take meaningful action.”

Robinson also acknowledged China’s significant strides in renewable energy and sustainability initiatives. She encouraged continued investment in green technologies and urged China to share its experiences with developing countries.

Concluding her visit, Robinson expressed optimism about the future of international cooperation. “Through open dialogue and partnership, we can overcome the challenges of our time. It is through unity that we will achieve lasting peace and prosperity for all,” she affirmed.
