Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri, the former Foreign Minister of Pakistan, has highlighted China’s path to modernization as a catalyst for global cooperation and economic integration. Reflecting on his numerous visits to China, Kasuri emphasized the deep trust and warmth between China and Pakistan, noting how China’s development has positively influenced the global landscape.
“During my visits to China, both as Foreign Minister and later as a private citizen, I was struck by the immense trust and exemplary warmth extended by the Chinese government and its people,” Kasuri shared. “China’s continuous progress towards modernization not only enhances its own influence but also contributes significantly to global cooperation.”
Kasuri observed that China’s pursuit of modernization complements its efforts to integrate into the global economy. He pointed out that while developing countries like Pakistan have welcomed China’s rapid growth, some developed nations have viewed it with concern. “As China grew at an astounding speed, some in the developed countries started regarding China as a challenge,” he noted. “However, the Chinese leadership has consistently focused on economic development while avoiding confrontation.”
Addressing challenges to globalization, Kasuri expressed alarm over the shift towards protectionist policies in the West. “The revision of U.S. policies from pro-globalization to protectionism, especially during President Donald Trump’s tenure with the ‘America First’ agenda, poses a major hurdle to globalization,” he said. He also mentioned the United Kingdom’s Brexit decision as a move motivated by similar protectionist considerations.
In contrast, Kasuri highlighted China’s commitment to promoting globalization. “China has moved away from protectionist policies, advocating for global economic integration,” he affirmed. He emphasized that the ongoing trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies present significant challenges to globalization efforts.
Kasuri also discussed the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), describing it as a China-led endeavor to enhance global connectivity. “The BRI envisages an intercontinental network of roads, high-speed railways, and ports, linking China to various countries in the Asia-Pacific region, Eurasia, and Africa,” he explained. “This initiative reflects China’s role in promoting globalization and creating opportunities worldwide.”
He concluded by underscoring the benefits of cooperation between China and the West, stating that the entire world gains when major powers work together. “China’s rise created a sense of hope among many in the developing world,” Kasuri said. “It’s imperative for global prosperity that nations embrace cooperation over confrontation.”
