CIIE 2023: Unveiling the Success Behind China’s Growing Import Expo

The 6th China International Import Expo (CIIE), held from November 5 to 10 in Shanghai, marks a significant milestone as it fully resumes offline exhibitions after the COVID-19 pandemic. Since its debut in 2018, the CIIE has evolved from the world’s first national-level import-themed expo into a globally influential platform for international procurement, investment promotion, and open cooperation.

Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a letter to the opening of the 6th CIIE on November 5, affirming China’s commitment to advancing high-standard opening-up and promoting economic globalization that is open, inclusive, balanced, and beneficial to all. Premier Li Qiang delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony, emphasizing that “China will continue to push forward opening up with stronger innovation momentum.”

This year’s CIIE is expected to attract guests from 154 countries, regions, and international organizations, with more than 3,400 registered exhibitors and nearly 410,000 professional visitors. The Hongqiao International Economic Forum, a significant component of the CIIE, is set to welcome over 8,000 participants, including more than 300 prominent guests such as foreign leaders, heads of international organizations, Nobel Prize and Turing Award laureates, and executives from Fortune Global 500 companies. These impressive figures reflect the global community’s strong participation and high expectations for the expo.

Injecting Certainty into an Uncertain World Economy

In a time of global economic challenges and rising trade protectionism, the CIIE serves as a beacon of stability and cooperation. By providing a platform for countries and businesses to showcase their products and services, the expo injects new vitality into international trade and offers much-needed opportunities for growth. Over the past five years, the CIIE has facilitated a cumulative intended turnover of nearly \$350 billion, showcasing more than 2,000 new products, technologies, and services.

The CIIE reflects China’s innovative approach to international trade, addressing the international community’s call for openness and collaboration. It offers a new model for global trade that is both inclusive and mutually beneficial, helping to navigate the complexities of the modern economic landscape.

Unlocking the Potential of the Chinese Market

The CIIE has become a gateway for international businesses to tap into the immense potential of the Chinese market, which operates dynamically all year round. According to the Ministry of Commerce, China saw the establishment of 33,154 new foreign-invested enterprises from January to August this year, a year-on-year increase of 33 percent.

From the continuous enhancement of pilot free trade zones to the integration of the Yangtze River Delta, China’s opening-up measures announced at previous CIIEs have been implemented effectively, providing tangible business opportunities for global enterprises. Notably, around 200 companies have participated in the expo for six consecutive years, and approximately 400 enterprises are returning after more than two years’ absence. These numbers underscore the appeal of China’s vast market and its significance as a global economic driver.

As the CIIE continues to grow in scale and influence, it stands as a testament to China’s dedication to fostering an open world economy. By bridging nations and creating shared value, the expo not only benefits China but also contributes to global economic development and prosperity.
