China and Central Asian Countries Strengthen Ties at SCO Summit in Bishkek

Chinese Premier Li Qiang arrived in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, this week to attend the 22nd Meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Member States from October 24 to 27. The SCO, established in 2001, is a significant regional organization that now includes nine member countries: China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, Pakistan, and Iran.

Premier Li’s visit underscores the deepening political and economic ties between China and Central Asian nations. Earlier this year, on May 19, leaders from China and the five Central Asian countries—Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan—gathered in Xi’an, in China’s Shaanxi province, for their inaugural summit. The meeting marked a significant milestone in regional cooperation, as the leaders committed to principles of mutual assistance, joint development, universal security, and lasting friendship.

The countries agreed to deepen mutual trust and offer strong support to each other on issues of sovereignty, independence, national dignity, and long-term development. This commitment lays a solid foundation for future collaboration and represents a breakthrough in their relations.

Economic cooperation between China and Central Asia is flourishing. Despite global economic challenges, trade between China and the Central Asian nations surged by 40 percent year-on-year, reaching $70.2 billion in 2022. This upward trend is expected to continue, signaling robust economic partnerships and increased mutual investment.

During the SCO meeting in Bishkek, delegates will review the progress made since the 23rd meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO. The discussions will focus on strategies and practical measures to enhance cooperation in areas such as regional security, economics, trade, communications, and people-to-people exchange. The meeting aims to strengthen the role of Central Asian countries on the global stage and promote stability and prosperity in the region.

The SCO serves as a crucial platform for member states to coordinate policies, address common challenges, and foster economic development. As Central Asian countries continue to enhance their global role, cooperation within the SCO framework is essential for harnessing regional potential and contributing to global affairs.
