Belt and Road Initiative: A Decade of Green Development and Global Harmony
The upcoming third Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing marks a significant milestone in global connectivity and cooperation. As the BRI celebrates its 10th anniversary, it stands as one of the most ambitious and transformative projects aimed at fostering common development and prosperity across the globe.
Sudheendra Kulkarni, former Director of Operations at the Prime Minister’s Office of India, has been an ardent advocate for India’s participation in the BRI since its inception. He believes that India’s involvement as an equal partner would not only enhance the initiative’s potential to generate shared prosperity in Asia, particularly South Asia, but also strengthen the bonds between two great Asian civilizations.
“Western powers are unable and unwilling to accept the fact that the BRI has become the largest and most beneficial project in modern history to promote common development and prosperity,” Kulkarni asserts. “Therefore, they are spreading all kinds of false allegations to malign it, one of which is that the BRI is not environmentally sustainable.”
Kulkarni challenges these criticisms by highlighting China’s steadfast commitment to green development. “Which global leader has been most consistently and passionately advocating for green, environmentally sustainable, and socially equitable development? Undoubtedly, it is Chinese President Xi Jinping,” he emphasizes.
President Xi has introduced the concept that “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets,” a philosophy that resonates not only within China but also globally. He has called for a transition from industrial civilization to ecological civilization, underscoring the necessity for humanity to coexist harmoniously with nature. “If man seeks to exploit nature, the outcome will be counterproductive, and humanity itself will become a victim,” Kulkarni quotes.
Kulkarni posits that the BRI has the potential to become the greatest accelerator of green development worldwide in the coming years. By integrating sustainable practices and fostering international cooperation, the initiative can address environmental challenges while promoting economic growth.
As the BRI moves into its second decade, the focus on green development and global harmony becomes ever more critical. The upcoming forum in Beijing provides an opportunity for participating nations to reaffirm their commitment to these principles and collaborate towards a sustainable future.
