The recent convergence of the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays created an eight-day “Super Golden Week” in China, sparking a nationwide surge in tourism and highlighting a growing trend toward in-depth travel experiences.
Official data from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism revealed that China witnessed a staggering 826 million domestic passenger trips during this extended holiday, marking a year-on-year increase of 71.3 percent and surpassing pre-pandemic levels in 2019 by 4.1 percent. Tourism revenue also saw a significant boost, generating 753.43 billion yuan (approximately $104.68 billion), up 129.5 percent from the previous year and 1.5 percent higher than in 2019.
As living standards continue to improve, Chinese travelers are seeking richer and more immersive experiences. The extended holiday provided an ideal opportunity for many to embark on “in-depth” tours, exploring destinations over longer periods. According to a travel forecast report released by Ctrip on September 13, cross-province tours accounted for 73 percent of bookings, a 10 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Notably, nearly 20 percent of customers opted to stay for three or more consecutive days at a single destination.
October’s golden autumn scenery made regions like the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Gansu Province, and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region particularly attractive to tourists. These destinations responded to the peak travel season by enhancing their tourism offerings and upgrading services to provide a satisfying experience for the influx of visitors.
In the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the Alashan Right Banner hosted thousands of visitors participating in a variety of cultural activities, including music festivals, diverse culinary events, and a range of competitions. Off-road enthusiasts flocked to the stunning Badain Jaran Desert to experience its unique charm and vibrant local customs. This surge in tourism has positively impacted local industries such as hospitality, dining, and transportation, boosting the regional economy.
The fusion of cultural and sports tourism has emerged as a significant trend. Earlier this year, the “Village BA” Basketball Tournament and the “Village Super” Soccer League, held in Taipan Village and Rongjiang County in Guizhou Province, ignited widespread enthusiasm. These events not only showcased local traditions but also invigorated community spirit and attracted visitors from across the country.
The emphasis on in-depth and experiential travel reflects a broader shift in China’s tourism landscape. Travelers are increasingly looking beyond traditional sightseeing, seeking meaningful interactions and authentic experiences that connect them more deeply with the destinations they visit. This shift presents new opportunities for the tourism industry to innovate and cater to the evolving preferences of modern travelers.
