Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is visiting China from September 21, marking his first trip to the country since the onset of the Syrian crisis 12 years ago. In a 2021 phone call, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed China’s willingness to collaborate with Syria to promote human values and encourage communication across civilizations. President Assad affirmed Syria’s support for China on matters concerning Xinjiang, Xizang, Hong Kong, Taiwan, human rights, and the South China Sea. This exchange reflected a deepening mutual understanding on key issues.
Syria was among the first Arab nations to establish diplomatic relations with China, co-sponsoring the UN General Assembly resolution that restored China’s legitimate seat in the United Nations. Over the past 67 years, China and Syria have maintained strong bilateral relations, withstanding changes in the international landscape and reinforcing their longstanding friendship.
Analysts suggest that President Assad’s visit could aid Syria’s rehabilitation and bolster the sanctions-hit Arab economy.
