The 19th Asian Games are set to commence on September 23 in Hangzhou, the capital city of east China’s Zhejiang Province. This prestigious event, first held in 1951 in New Delhi, India, stands as the world’s second-largest multi-sport gathering after the Olympics. Organized by the Olympic Council of Asia, the games provide a platform for Asian athletes to showcase their talents and represent their nations every four years.
This year, more than 12,000 athletes from 45 countries and regions across Asia will compete for 481 gold medals in 40 sports. Competitions will take place at 56 venues spread across six cities in Zhejiang Province, including Hangzhou, Ningbo, Wenzhou, Huzhou, Shaoxing, and Jinhua.
On September 16, the Hangzhou Asian Games Village opened its doors to welcome athletes from around the region. The Main Media Center (MMC) for the event was inaugurated on September 18. Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the Opening Ceremony on September 23 and will host a welcoming banquet and bilateral events for foreign leaders in attendance.

Sporting events like these not only highlight a nation’s prowess but also foster international goodwill and understanding. They provide an opportunity to bridge gaps, reduce misunderstandings, and promote collaboration among participating countries and regions.
China, as the host nation, aims to strengthen connectivity and cooperation among all participants. Hangzhou, following in the footsteps of the Beijing Olympics and the Guangzhou Asian Games, seeks to demonstrate China’s openness and warm hospitality. The country has accumulated significant experience from hosting major sporting events, solidifying its reputation as a capable and gracious host.
