20th CAEXPO Highlights ASEAN Centrality and Strengthens China-ASEAN Ties

The 20th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) and China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit held in Nanning have reinforced the significance of ASEAN centrality in regional development. More than just a trade exhibition showcasing a fascinating array of goods and products, CAEXPO serves as a vital platform for dialogues and meetings that shape regional policy directions.

Back in 2014, the introduction of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road at CAEXPO laid the groundwork for what is now known as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). This concept, first fully explained to an international audience at CAEXPO, significantly impacted business engagement and development over the past decade.

This year’s CAEXPO continued this tradition with a keynote address by Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who emphasized building a closer China-ASEAN community. His remarks echoed the recent ASEAN meeting in Jakarta, where ASEAN centrality in regional decision-making was a major focus.

Premier Li acknowledged the importance of ASEAN centrality in fostering strong China-ASEAN relationships. This recognition highlights China’s commitment to working within existing regional trade structures, with CAEXPO serving as a practical example of this collaborative approach.

By placing ASEAN countries at the intersection of the Belt and Road on both land and sea, China reflects the historical connections of trade through ancient routes like the Tea Horse Road and maritime centers such as the Straits of Malacca. This strategy contrasts with approaches that may seek to undermine ASEAN centrality by turning economic partnerships into geopolitical platforms.

The continued focus on ASEAN centrality at CAEXPO signals a shared commitment to regional cooperation and development, reinforcing the dynamic and influential role of Asia in global affairs.
