The United Nations Sustainable Development Summit convened in New York from September 18 to 19, gathering world leaders to assess progress on the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set in 2015. These 17 goals aim to address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, and climate change by 2030. However, at the halfway mark, the outlook appears grim.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed concern, stating that the SDGs are “disappearing in the rearview mirror.” According to the 2023 SDG report, only 15 percent of the 140 SDG targets are on track to be met. Approximately half are moderately or severely off track, while 37 percent are at a standstill or regressing. Notably, extreme poverty and food and water insecurity have risen for the first time in a generation, exacerbated by global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and international conflicts.
Amid these challenges, the summit serves as a critical juncture for nations to recommit to the SDGs. European countries currently lead in progress toward these goals. The United States, despite its wealth, ranks 39th, having moved up only two places. The UN has highlighted that the U.S. shows “the least support for the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs,” and it remains one of the few countries yet to submit a Voluntary National Review.
China, as the world’s second-largest economy and a developing nation, holds a unique position. Ranked 63rd out of 166 countries, China has made significant strides in areas such as poverty eradication and education. The nation is advancing on eight additional goals, slipping back on only one. China’s commitment is further exemplified by its Global Development Initiative (GDI), which aims to accelerate the implementation of the SDGs worldwide.
The GDI focuses on practical cooperation in key areas like poverty alleviation, food security, and green development. By promoting collaboration and sharing resources, China seeks to foster sustainable growth not only domestically but also across the globe. This initiative underscores China’s dedication to addressing common challenges and contributing to a more equitable and sustainable future.
As the international community grapples with setbacks in achieving the SDGs, China’s proactive approach offers a pathway forward. Through initiatives like the GDI, there is potential to reinvigorate global efforts and reinforce the collective commitment to sustainable development.
