20th China-ASEAN Expo Opens, Celebrating Two Decades of Partnership

The bustling city of Nanning in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region came alive on September 17 as it hosted the 20th China-ASEAN Expo, marking a significant milestone in the enduring partnership between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This year's expo carries special significance, commemorating both the 20th anniversary of the China-ASEAN strategic partnership and the inception of the expo itself.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony, emphasizing the deepening ties and mutual cooperation that have defined the relationship over the past two decades. High-level representatives from ASEAN member countries, including Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Indonesian Vice President Ma'ruf Amin, Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, and ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn, also attended the event.

For 14 consecutive years, China has maintained its position as ASEAN's largest trading partner, and since 2020, both have been each other's largest trading partners for three consecutive years. The implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) has further propelled economic integration, advancing the construction of the upgraded China-ASEAN Free Trade Area.

"The China-ASEAN Expo has been an essential platform over the past 20 years, actively promoting trade, investment, and tourism between ASEAN and China," noted ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn. The expo has evolved into a comprehensive cooperation platform, expanding from traditional trade and investment to encompass international production capacity cooperation, finance, digital economy, health, tourism, and education.

Businesses and investors from both regions have benefited immensely from the expo and the accompanying China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit. These events have facilitated deeper economic collaboration, fostering an environment where shared growth and mutual prosperity are achievable goals.

As the world navigates the complexities of the global economy, the strengthened partnership between China and ASEAN serves as a beacon of regional cooperation. The continued success of the China-ASEAN Expo underscores the commitment of both sides to work collaboratively towards a brighter future.
