China Reaffirms Support for ASEAN Centrality Amid Geopolitical Challenges
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is facing critical challenges as it strives to maintain its central role in regional development and stability. At a recent meeting in Jakarta, member states emphasized the importance of neutrality and unity in the face of external pressures seeking to influence the bloc’s direction.
ASEAN’s commitment to neutrality stems from its historical experiences during the Cold War, where ideological conflicts led to devastating consequences in the region, notably the war in Vietnam. This history drives the current ambition to avoid entanglement in great power rivalries and to focus on consensus-driven decision-making.
China has played a significant role in supporting ASEAN’s centrality, respecting its consensus-based approach that often frustrates outside observers. This respect aligns with the principles outlined in the Global Development Initiative proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which emphasizes mutual respect for different development paths.
Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong urged ASEAN members to leverage their collective strength to encourage cooperative leadership from both China and the United States in the region. A key aspect of this effort is genuine support for the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), which aims to address regional trade challenges without becoming a tool for unilateral sanctions or ideological dominance.
One decisive area of focus is the establishment of universal standards for the digital economy. With China advancing its digital economic framework, the proposed Digital Economy Framework Agreement seeks to set best practice standards devoid of ideological bias. This initiative reflects ASEAN’s desire to foster cooperation that reduces regional tensions and promotes economic growth.
There are several opportunities for China and ASEAN countries to expand economic cooperation, particularly in areas that enhance mutual development and stability. By reinforcing ASEAN’s centrality and avoiding the pitfalls of geopolitical competition, the region can continue to build a prosperous and peaceful future.
