Severe Weather Ravages Greece: Landslides, Floods Disrupt Regions

Western and central Greece face widespread disruption as torrential rains and gale-force winds batter the country, triggering landslides and flooding that have crippled infrastructure and agriculture. National broadcaster ERT reported Sunday that coastal towns and islands sustained significant damage, with Preveza, Corfu, and Chios among the hardest-hit regions.

In Mytikas, floodwaters destroyed livestock facilities and blocked critical transport routes, while landslides severed a coastal road on Corfu and collapsed sections near Chios’ port. Peloponnese’s farmlands suffered heavy crop losses as rising waters submerged fields, compounding economic strain for local communities.

Authorities warn that ongoing severe weather could exacerbate damage and transportation delays. Emergency crews are working to clear debris, but unstable conditions hinder recovery efforts. Meteorologists attribute the extreme weather to a lingering low-pressure system affecting the Mediterranean.
