Deadly Floods Ravage Western Syria as Torrential Rains Trigger Emergency Response

Western Syria faces a humanitarian crisis after torrential rains triggered flash floods across multiple provinces on February 7-8, 2026, killing at least 14 people and displacing hundreds. The Syrian Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management reported continuous response operations through Sunday as floodwaters submerged urban areas and destroyed critical infrastructure.

Latakia, Idlib, and Hama provinces bore the brunt of the disaster, with 14 displacement camps in western Idlib inundated. An estimated 300 families lost shelter and supplies in camps already strained by years of conflict. Emergency teams worked through the night to evacuate residents trapped in submerged buildings and clear debris-blocked roads.

"Our teams responded to over 120 distress calls within the first six hours," a ministry spokesperson stated. "The priority remains saving lives and preventing secondary disasters from waterlogged structures." Meteorological authorities warn of additional rainfall this week, complicating recovery efforts in vulnerable regions.
