Kenyas National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) has reported a severe deterioration of drought conditions across 20 out of 23 counties in the country's arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs). This worsening situation places millions at risk of starvation.
The NDMA, responsible for drought mitigation, attributes the escalation to the poor performance of the 2024 short rainy season. \"The 20 counties are classified in the 'normal' drought phase, but on a worsening trend,\" the authority stated in its drought report for January 2025.
