22 States Challenge New York’s $75B Climate Fund as Unconstitutional

Twenty-two states filed a lawsuit against New York on Thursday, arguing that the state's new law mandating major energy producers to contribute $75 billion to a climate change damage fund violates the constitution.

The lawsuit, initiated in Albany, names Attorney General Letitia James and other state officials as defendants. The plaintiffs contend that the legislation oversteps legal boundaries, imposing undue financial burdens on a select group of energy companies.

As the legal battle unfolds, the implications for the energy sector and climate policy remain significant, with potential reverberations across regional and global markets.
