The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a non-profit global research organization, on Wednesday called on African countries to actively involve local communities in collecting data on river discharge. This initiative aims to enhance water resource management across the continent.
IWMI highlighted that Africa's 63 transboundary rivers, essential for the livelihoods of millions, are plagued by insufficient and outdated gauging stations. This inadequacy hampers the ability to accurately monitor water flow and assess its suitability for consumption and other uses.
By engaging local communities in data collection, IWMI believes that more reliable and up-to-date information can be gathered, leading to better-informed decisions and sustainable management of water resources in Africa.
