The United Nations confirmed on Tuesday that it has received official notification from the United States of its withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on climate change.
The notification, dated January 27, 2025, was submitted to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his capacity as the depositary of the agreement. Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for Guterres, announced the development during a daily briefing.
\\"The United States notified the Secretary-General, in his capacity as depositary, of its withdrawal, on 27 January 2025, from the Paris Agreement of 12 December 2015,\\" Dujarric stated.
According to Article 28, paragraph 2, of the Paris Agreement, the withdrawal will take effect one year after the notification date, on January 27, 2026.
Dujarric reaffirmed the UN's commitment to the Paris Agreement and expressed support for all effective efforts to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. \\"The Secretary-General remains committed to working with all parties to ensure the full implementation of the Paris Agreement,\\" he added.
The Paris Agreement is a landmark international accord adopted in December 2015, aiming to combat climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, preferably to 1.5 degrees, compared to pre-industrial levels. The agreement brings all nations into a common cause to undertake ambitious efforts to combat climate change and adapt to its effects.
The U.S. withdrawal marks a significant shift in global climate policy, raising concerns among environmentalists, scientists, and international leaders about the future of efforts to mitigate climate change. The United States, being one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases, plays a crucial role in international climate initiatives.
Environmental groups have expressed disappointment over the decision, emphasizing the urgent need for collective action to address the climate crisis. Meanwhile, other nations have reiterated their commitment to the Paris Agreement, vowing to continue their efforts to reduce emissions and transition to sustainable energy sources.
The international community now watches closely as the ramifications of the U.S. withdrawal unfold, with hopes that global cooperation on climate action will persist despite the setback.
