Severe monsoon rains have unleashed devastating floods across Malaysia and southern Thailand, claiming over 30 lives and displacing tens of thousands of residents. As both nations brace for more heavy rainfall, authorities are ramping up evacuation efforts and preparing emergency shelters.
In Malaysia, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim revealed that five days of torrential downpours last week brought an unprecedented amount of rain, equivalent to the typical precipitation over six months. The relentless deluge has wrought havoc in the northeastern state of Kelantan and neighboring Terengganu, damaging infrastructure and inundating communities.
Rescue teams have been navigating flooded areas in boats, delivering essential supplies to those stranded in their homes. “The scale of the disaster is immense,” said Prime Minister Anwar. “We estimate that repairing the damaged infrastructure will cost the government around 1 billion ringgit ($224 million).”
Although the rains subsided over the weekend, the Malaysian Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy rains to return later on Tuesday. The government is now bracing for another monsoon surge expected to hit on Sunday, potentially exacerbating the already critical situation.
According to the National Disaster Command Center, approximately 91,000 people across eight states remain in temporary shelters such as schools, community halls, and relief centers after being evacuated from their homes. This number has decreased from about 150,000 evacuees on Sunday, with about 88 percent of those displaced hailing from Kelantan and Terengganu.
In southern Thailand, similar scenes of devastation are unfolding as communities grapple with the aftermath of the floods. Local authorities are coordinating with aid organizations to provide relief to affected residents and are closely monitoring weather forecasts to anticipate further challenges.
As the monsoon season continues to impact Southeast Asia, both Malaysia and Thailand are calling for solidarity and support. The resilience of the affected communities is being tested, but efforts are underway to ensure safety and begin the long process of recovery.
