At the heart of COP29’s bustling China Pavilion, a new generation of climate leaders took center stage on November 11. Hosted by the Global Alliance of Universities on Climate (GAUC), the 2024 ‘Climate x’ High-Level Event showcased innovative climate actions spearheaded by youth from around the world.
This event marked the culmination of GAUC’s ‘Climate x’ series, spotlighting the commitment and creativity of students dedicated to achieving global carbon neutrality. The Blue Zone venue was abuzz with energy as prominent figures in global climate governance joined to witness the impact of these young changemakers.
Notable attendees included Liu Zhenmin, special envoy for climate change of China; Rachel Kyte, special representative for climate of the UK; Felipe Paullier, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Youth Affairs; and Catherine McKenna, chair of the UN Secretary-General’s High-level Expert Group on Net-Zero Commitments and former Canadian minister of environment and climate change. They witnessed firsthand the achievements of student representatives and youth leaders who have made significant strides in climate action over the past year.
In his address, Liu Zhenmin emphasized the vital role of youth in driving climate action forward. “I hope young faces here will continue to practice low-carbon actions, demonstrate leadership, and inspire more peers to join this great cause,” he encouraged, highlighting the importance of youth-led initiatives in global climate governance.
Rachel Kyte praised the collaborative spirit fostered by GAUC, noting how it brings together students across continents to address shared environmental challenges. Felipe Paullier underscored the synergy between climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), urging for integrated approaches to global issues.
Catherine McKenna spoke passionately about the urgency of tackling climate change, pointing to the power of multi-stakeholder collaboration. “Addressing climate challenges requires the collective effort of governments, businesses, academics, and especially our youth,” she stated. “Their leadership is key to driving meaningful progress.”
The event not only celebrated the achievements of the past year but also served as a call to action for continued youth engagement in climate initiatives. Through programs like GAUC’s ‘Climate x’ series, young leaders are equipped to innovate and collaborate, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
