COP29 in Baku: What to Expect from the UN Climate Conference

Representatives from nearly 200 countries are set to gather in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22 for the 2024 UN Climate Change Conference, or COP29.

In July, COP29 President-Designate Mukhtar Babayev sent an official letter to the conference’s parties and constituencies. According to the letter, the enhancement of ambition and the enabling of action are the two pillars of the conference.

The upcoming conference aims to build upon previous efforts to combat climate change by focusing on these two key areas. The enhancement of ambition refers to the need for countries to strengthen their commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to set more aggressive targets in line with global climate goals.

Enabling action focuses on practical steps that can be taken to implement these ambitious plans. This includes financing for climate initiatives, technology transfer, and capacity building in developing countries to ensure that all nations can contribute effectively to global efforts.

COP29 in Baku is expected to be a pivotal moment for international climate policy, bringing together diverse voices to address the pressing environmental challenges facing the world today.
