A cutting-edge tomato-picking robot is capturing attention at the 31st China Yangling Agricultural Hi-tech Fair in Xianyang City, northwest China's Shaanxi Province. This innovative device is showcasing how artificial intelligence is transforming traditional agriculture.
The robot integrates artificial intelligence and multi-sensor technology, utilizing a vision algorithm based on deep learning. This enables its robotic arm to identify, locate, grasp, and cut ripe tomatoes efficiently.
One of the standout features of the robot is its ability to distinguish fruits at different levels of ripening. It selectively harvests tomatoes that are ready, a task that was traditionally labor-intensive and time-consuming.
“This robot consists of a walking system, vision system, and picking execution system,” explained Li Shenyang, one of the fair’s organizers. “It can adapt to different field environments and process specific information related to the produce’s size, color, shape, ripeness, and picking location.”
Li added, “Through reasonable path planning, it can perform various tasks such as grabbing and picking the fruit and placing it in baskets.”
The introduction of such advanced robotics in agriculture signifies a significant step toward increasing efficiency and reducing labor costs. Visitors at the fair are expressing keen interest in how this technology can be applied to other crops and farming practices across China and beyond.
