Mount Fanjing in SW China Joins IUCN Green List for Global Conservation

Mount Fanjing National Nature Reserve in southwest China’s Guizhou Province has achieved a remarkable milestone by being officially included on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas.

Nestled in the heart of Guizhou’s lush landscapes, Mount Fanjing is renowned for its breathtaking scenery and unique biodiversity. Home to rare species like the Guizhou golden monkey and the Fanjingshan fir, the reserve encompasses an ecosystem that has remained largely untouched by human activity.

The IUCN Green List is a prestigious global program that recognizes protected and conserved areas demonstrating excellence in fair and effective conservation. Inclusion on this list signifies that Mount Fanjing meets rigorous international standards, reflecting its significant role in safeguarding global biodiversity.

“This recognition is a testament to our relentless efforts in conservation and our commitment to preserving the natural heritage for future generations,” said authorities in Tongren City, where the mountain is located.

Mount Fanjing’s inclusion not only brings international acclaim but also underscores the increasing importance of biodiversity conservation amid global environmental challenges. It serves as an inspiration for other regions striving to balance ecological preservation with sustainable development.

The IUCN will formally announce the new Green List members for 2024 at the upcoming 16th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16), set to take place in Colombia in late October.

As the world looks toward collaborative efforts in environmental conservation, Mount Fanjing stands as a beacon of successful preservation, embodying the harmonious coexistence of humanity and nature.
