Hundreds March in Ghana Against Dangerous Illegal Gold Mining

Hundreds of people took to the streets of Accra, Ghana’s capital, on Friday in a peaceful protest against unlicensed gold mining, known locally as “galamsey.” The demonstrators are calling on authorities to take action against the dangerous and environmentally damaging practice.

Illegal small-scale gold mining has surged this year, following an almost 30% rise in global gold prices. As profits from gold mining soar, more unregulated operations have emerged, posing significant risks to the environment and the health of local communities.

Protesters marched through the city holding banners and chanting slogans to raise awareness about the detrimental impacts of galamsey. They urged the government to enforce stricter regulations and ensure the protection of the country’s natural resources.

Galamsey activities lead to deforestation, water pollution, and the degradation of agricultural lands, threatening the livelihoods of many residents. The protesters emphasized the need for sustainable mining practices and support for communities affected by illegal mining.

The government has previously launched campaigns to curb illegal mining, but the recent surge in gold prices has led to a resurgence of galamsey operations. Observers are keen to see how authorities will respond to the growing public outcry.
