Mongolia Plants 84 Million Trees Since 2021 in Ambitious ‘Billion Trees’ Campaign

Mongolia has made significant strides in its battle against desertification, planting over 84 million trees across the country since 2021. This impressive feat is part of the nation's ambitious \"Billion Trees\" campaign, launched by President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh.

Announced at the United Nations General Assembly in October 2021, the \"Billion Trees\" initiative aims to plant at least one billion trees by 2030. The campaign is a direct response to the increasing threat of desertification exacerbated by climate change, which has led to more frequent yellow dust storms and land degradation in Mongolia.

According to the presidential press office, the number and size of trees, saplings, seed resources, and tree nurseries have increased five to six times compared to the period before the campaign began. These efforts signify a robust national commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Mongolia, despite its vast land area of over 1.5 million square kilometers, has less than 10 percent forest coverage. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change reports that nearly 77 percent of the country's territory is affected by desertification and land degradation, posing significant challenges to the ecosystem and livelihoods.

The \"Billion Trees\" campaign not only aims to restore degraded lands but also to foster public awareness and participation in environmental protection. By involving communities and promoting sustainable practices, Mongolia is taking crucial steps toward mitigating the impacts of climate change and preserving its natural heritage for future generations.
