New Giant Panda Pair An An and Ke Ke Arrive in Hong Kong to Mark 27th Anniversary

On a momentous Thursday, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) warmly welcomed two new residents—giant pandas An An and Ke Ke. The arrival of this playful duo marks the third pair of pandas sent to Hong Kong, commemorating the 27th anniversary of the city’s return to China.

A grand welcome ceremony was held at Ocean Park Hong Kong, attended by HKSAR Chief Executive Chan Kwok-ki and other distinguished officials. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as the pandas took their first steps in their new home.

An An and Ke Ke departed from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport in Sichuan Province. Their journey to Hong Kong not only strengthens the bond between the regions but also enriches the city’s cultural tapestry. The pair will join four other pandas already residing at Ocean Park, further establishing the park as a premier destination for wildlife enthusiasts.

Before meeting the public, An An and Ke Ke will undergo a 30-day quarantine period to acclimate to their surroundings. Ocean Park staff have diligently prepared for their arrival since July, engaging in care training and sensory exposure to ensure a smooth transition. The pandas are expected to make their public debut by December, delighting visitors with their unique personalities.

Born in June 2019, male panda An An is known for his playful and agile nature, often showcasing acrobatic feats. In contrast, female panda Ke Ke is gentle and adept at climbing, often found perched among the trees. Their dynamic traits promise to offer an engaging experience for all who visit.

Accompanying the pandas is Cheng Yanxi, a dedicated veterinarian from the China Conservation and Research Center (CCRC) for the Giant Panda in Dujiangyan, Sichuan Province. “Both An An and Ke Ke are in excellent health,” Cheng reported. He will remain in Hong Kong for the next two to three months to oversee their adaptation to the new environment.

The addition of An An and Ke Ke to Hong Kong’s panda family symbolizes a strengthening of cultural and ecological ties. As the city eagerly awaits their public appearance, preparations continue to ensure they thrive in their new habitat, offering inspiration and joy to residents and visitors alike.
