Cultural Treasures of Minorities: The Dulong People

The Dulong River basin, cradled at the northern edge of the Gaoligong Mountains, is a land untouched by time. Towering fault-block mountains and deep canyons create a natural barrier, preserving this pristine and primitive landscape.

In this secluded region dwells the Dulong people, an ethnic group residing in the mountains of southwest China. As one of the least populous among China's 56 ethnic groups, the Dulong are distinctive in their history and way of life. They are referred to as a "direct-transition" minority because they did not bid farewell to primitive life until the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. Since then, they have stepped directly into socialist society, embarking on a new journey while retaining their unique cultural identity.
