China’s CNSA Opens Chang’e-6 Lunar Samples to Global Scientists

The China National Space Administration (CNSA) has announced plans to open applications for Chang’e-6 lunar soil samples to scientists around the world. In an exclusive interview with CGTN earlier this week, Bian Zhigang, vice administrator of the CNSA, confirmed that international scientists will have access to the lunar samples collected by the upcoming Chang’e-6 mission.

“This is our policy,” Bian stated, emphasizing the CNSA’s commitment to global collaboration. “We will continue to be open to global scientists in the future.”

Bian highlighted that international cooperation in space exploration is set to reach new heights in forthcoming missions. “For many future missions, we could be working with international partners starting at the design stage,” he explained. “For example, with the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), from the very beginning, there will be joint design and construction, and then all will share the benefits.”

The Chang’e-6 mission, part of China’s ambitious lunar exploration program, aims to collect and return samples from the far side of the Moon. Opening access to these samples underscores China’s dedication to fostering international scientific collaboration and advancing humanity’s understanding of the lunar environment.

The CNSA’s initiative presents a significant opportunity for scientists worldwide to engage in groundbreaking lunar research. By sharing lunar samples and collaborating on future missions, the global scientific community can work together to unlock the mysteries of the Moon and pave the way for deeper space exploration.
