Facing the aftermath of severe weather conditions that ravaged parts of Europe this spring and summer, the European Commission has stepped forward with a proposed financial support package totaling €119.7 million ($141.4 million). This aid aims to bolster farmers in Bulgaria, Germany, Estonia, Italy, and Romania who have been significantly impacted by the adverse climatic events.
According to the Commission’s statement released on Monday, Germany is set to receive the largest portion of the funding, amounting to €46.5 million. Italy follows with €37.4 million, Romania with €21.6 million, Bulgaria with €10.9 million, and Estonia with €3.3 million.
Janusz Wojciechowski, European Commissioner for Agriculture, emphasized the importance of this support, stating, “This proposal represents a strong statement of EU solidarity with farmers in need. Our farmers do not stand alone in the fight against climate change.”
The proposed aid underscores the European Union’s commitment to supporting its agricultural sector amidst increasing climate challenges. The financial assistance is expected to help farmers recover from the damages incurred and adapt to future environmental uncertainties.
