Tokyo has shattered records with an unseasonably hot day. On Wednesday, the mercury soared past 35 degrees Celsius in central Tokyo, marking September 18 as the latest date for an “extremely hot day” since records began in 1875, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The observation center in Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward registered a sweltering 35.1 degrees Celsius shortly after 11:55 a.m. local time (0255 GMT). The JMA classifies any day exceeding 35 degrees Celsius as an “extremely hot day.”
The previous record for the latest “extremely hot day” in central Tokyo was set on September 12, 1942. This new milestone highlights ongoing concerns about rising temperatures and climate change impacts in the region.
Meanwhile, the central city of Nagoya also broke its own record. The city observed a scorching 36.4 degrees Celsius shortly after 1:10 p.m. local time (0410 GMT) on Wednesday, the JMA reported.
“These unprecedented temperatures this late in the year are a stark reminder of changing climate patterns,” a JMA spokesperson commented. Residents are advised to stay hydrated and take necessary precautions against heat-related illnesses.
