Typhoon Bebinca, Strongest in 70 Years, Makes Landfall in Shanghai

Shanghai—Typhoon Bebinca, the 13th typhoon of the year, fiercely made landfall in Shanghai at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Monday, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Observatory. This marks the strongest typhoon to strike the city in over seven decades.

With maximum wind speeds near its center reaching a staggering 42 meters per second, Bebinca churned ashore in the Lingang area of Shanghai’s Pudong District. Residents reported intense winds and heavy rainfall as the typhoon swept through the city, leading to widespread disruptions.

In anticipation of the typhoon’s impact, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters activated a Level IV emergency response for Anhui Province on Sunday and elevated the response levels in Shanghai and Zhejiang Province to Level III. Authorities urged citizens to stay indoors and secure their properties against potential damage.

“We are experiencing the most severe typhoon in decades,” a spokesperson from the Shanghai Meteorological Observatory remarked. “Our teams are working around the clock to monitor the situation and provide timely updates to the public.”

The typhoon’s arrival has prompted the cancellation of flights, suspension of ferry services, and closure of schools in affected areas. Emergency services are on high alert to respond to any incidents caused by the extreme weather conditions.

Bebinca’s path continues inland, where it is expected to weaken but still bring heavy rainfall to regions beyond Shanghai. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to manage flood risks and ensure public safety.

Citizens are advised to follow official channels for updates and heed the guidance of local authorities. The collaborative efforts aim to minimize the typhoon’s impact on the city’s infrastructure and residents’ daily lives.
